Scientists already know that green tea contains anti-oxidants which may have a protective effect against cancer.

But now they have discovered that chemicals in the tea also shut down a key molecule which can play a significant role in the development of cancer.

The molecule, known as the aryl hydrocarbon (AH) receptor, has the ability to activate genes - but not always in a positive way.

Tobacco smoke and dioxins, in particular, disrupt the functioning of the molecule and cause it to trigger potentially harmful gene activity.

The researchers, from Rochester University, found that two chemicals in green tea inhibit AH activity.

Similar compounds

Both chemicals are similar to compounds called flavonoids, which are found in broccoli, cabbage, grapes and red wine, and which are also known to help prevent cancer.

Researcher Professor Thomas Gasiewicz said: "Green tea may work differently than we thought to exert its anti-cancer activity.

"It's likely that the compounds in green tea act through many different pathways."

The Rochester team showed that the chemicals shut down the AH receptor in cancerous mouse cells.

Early results indicate the same is true in human cells.

However, the scientists say that the results in the laboratory do not necessarily translate to everyday life as the crucial factor is how green tea is broken down inside the body.

In addition, there are a lot of differences between various types of green tea.

Dr Julie Sharp, a science information office at Cancer Research UK, said: "This research describes additional properties of green tea that may be beneficial but which have yet to be tested properly.

"The causes of cancer are complex and both diet and our genetic make-up act together to influence our risk of developing the disease.

"Cancer Research UK is currently involved in a large-scale study of diet and health that is researching the eating habits of over half a million people in 10 European countries to try and help unravel this complexity."

Research has also suggested that green tea may help to reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis and to lower cholesterol levels.

The research was published in 2002 in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Chamomile

Introduction

A plant or part of a plant used for its flavor, scent, or potential therapeutic properties. Includes flowers, leaves, bark, fruit, seeds, stems, and roots.

Chamomile—common names, uses, potential side effects, and resources for more information. Two types of chamomile are used for health conditions: German chamomile and Roman chamomile. While the two kinds are thought to have similar effects on the body, the German variety is more commonly used in the United States and is the focus of this fact sheet.

Common Names—chamomile, German chamomile

Latin Names—Matricaria recutita, Chamomilla recutita

What It Is Used For

Chamomile has been widely used in children and adults for thousands of years for a variety of health conditions.

The herb is often used for sleeplessness; anxiety; and gastrointestinal conditions such as upset stomach, gas, and diarrhea.

It is used topically for skin conditions and for mouth ulcers resulting from cancer treatment.

How It Is Used

The flowering tops of the chamomile plant are used to make teas, liquid extracts, capsules, or tablets. The herb can also be applied to the skin as a cream or an ointment, or used as a mouth rinse.

What the Science Says

Chamomile has not been well studied in people so there is little evidence to support its use for any condition.

Some early studies point to chamomile's possible benefits for mouth ulcers and certain skin conditions. In combination with other herbs, it may be of some benefit for upset stomach and for diarrhea in children.

NCCAM-funded research on chamomile includes studies of the herb for generalized anxiety disorder and for chronic pain caused by children's bowel disorders.

Side Effects and Cautions

There are reports of rare allergic reactions in people who have eaten or come into contact with chamomile products. Reactions include skin rashes, throat swelling, shortness of breath, and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction).

People are more likely to experience allergic reactions to chamomile if they are allergic to related plants in the daisy family, which includes ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies.

Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This helps to ensure coordinated and safe care.

Sources

German chamomile. Most of these itchy scalp treatments that promise relief from scalp conditions sound very attractive until we start reading the fine print.

Sodium Laureth / Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), What's that? Why do labels say to call a Poison Control Center if you accidentally swallow shampoo? And what are those warning labels on the back all about? What does it do to your head if it's that toxic?

Stop! What you must know is that several chemicals, especially SLS, strip the natural oils from the skin and even corrode it, along with your eye membranes. Have you also noticed that your hair has been thinning? Well hair follicle damage is another little known but very common symptom of these chemicals.

Actually, most commercial shampoos & scalp treatments are designed to meet people's sensory expectations offering instant gratification and the illusion that they are doing their job. So therein lies the problem. For example adding silicone to conditioner induces an artificial shine but in truth can create problems long term includingsensitivities.

Most people expect a shampoo to:

* Foam up nicely
* Smell good
* Take all the so-called nasty oiliness out of their hair
* Make their hair feel squeaky-clean

And that's a reasonable ask - think about it if your shampoo didn't foam up, smell good, or leave your hair feeling squeaky-clean, would you trust it? Well, here's the thing: 90% of commercial shampoos achieve the foaming effect using the equivalent of engine degreasers to strip off not only dirt and grime but also valuable natural oils that your scalp needs.

Yes -your scalp needs natural oils. Without them, your body has no natural defence - those oils are there for a reason! Your scalp needs to maintain a natural PH balance that if disturbed - can develop into a dry, itchy irritated scalp. The good news is that there are many natural remedies you can use with moisturising oils and natural powerful alternatives to heal & reverse any scalp problem by restoring balance safely. You can easily repair follicle and damage - even boost hair growth and use your own home remedies for scalp cell regeneration. Linda's Yeast Infection No More can be more accurately described as a "Candida Bible." It is quite simply one of the most comprehensive, complete, and precise guides to candida freedom you will ever read. What makes it so much different than other yeast infection publications on the market?

Well first of all, it's not just a "yeast infection relief" program, it's a candida cure program. This may seem like semantics or wordplay at first, but once you've read just the first chapters, there will be no doubt in your mind that pursuing "yeast infection relief" is not only the wrong goal, it may be the reason that you've failed to stop and maintain your 'candida free internal environment'. Yeast Infection No More shows you exactly why you should fix the internal problem that's causing your yeast infection, not just masking the symptoms or getting relief and then goes on to show you exactly how to do it.

Secondly, what makes Yeast Infection No More different is the amount of attention that is paid to each and every element required to achieve permanent freedom from candida albicans related symptoms. Yeast Infection No More not only thoroughly discusses the lies, myths and fallacies surrounding a very confusing subject, it is simply the most detailed book about yeast infection, and holistic health ever written.

The Yeast Infection No More book is quite extensive (150 pages of rock solid content) which focuses on 100% natural yeast infection treatment. That means there aren't recommendations for harsh prescription drugs with nasty side effects. In yeast infection No More core formula section (The 5 step system) - Nothing is held back. In this section, Linda gives a detailed overview of each step, and then dives into the specifics in a perfect chronological order. There are also outstanding charts and checklists which make it very easy to know where you are at in the program and follow it.

Because the Yeast Infection No More program is not a quick fix ‘fairy tale’ cure but a complete holistic solution aimed at eliminating the root cause of yeast infection and candida (regardless of their severity) and ensure your will permanently be candida-free, it does take work and persistence to complete. "The dictionary is the only place success comes before work" says Linda, as she emphasizes the "no quick fix" philosophy behind the entire book.

If there is any drawback to the Yeast Infection No More ebook, it's that it contains so much information, that some readers may find it a bit overwhelming. Those who are looking for a quick start type of candida program, might be a bit intimated at first. The good part however, is that even these types of readers can feel confident and assured that it will be worth the effort because this will literally be the last book they ever have to buy on the subject.

Who will benefit most from Yeast Infection No More?

In the broadest sense, anyone and everyone who needs to cure their candida and regain their natural inner balance will benefit from Yeast Infection No More. This ebook is honestly for everyone. Even people without yeast infection. This is a total health rejuvenation program better than 98% of the nutrition and alternative health books on the market. In fact, the advice in this ebook is guaranteed to help you with any other health condition you might have, especially if you suffer from digestive disorders such as IBS, Leaky Gut Syndrome, bloating, chronic constipation allergies and acne.

In terms of graphic design, Yeast Infection No More is a clean and professionally formatted PDF e-book. It is well organized and ideal for printing and reading in the comfort of your own home.

This impressive and unique publication has changed many lives and the hundreds of inspiring testimonials and success stories are found on the Yeast Infection No More website archives as proof.

The Bottom line?

Anyone looking for a quick fix solution to candida infection, anyone looking to be told fairy-tales, and anyone looking for a "magic bullet", anti-yeast pills, over the counters, 'yeast infection freedom in 2 days' hyped up programs should not waste his or her time with Yeast Infection No More.

On the other hand, anyone searching for the truth about candida and alternative health and who is ready and willing to put in some work and make the lifestyle changes necessary to achieve candida freedom, will find Yeast Infection No More to be one of the best investments they ever made in their lives. Iodine kills bad bacteria that causes sickness inside your body.

Kelp is quite useful against strep throat when used in tea form. Since this herb is high in natural iodine itself, drinking it in tea form will coat the throat, allowing the iodine to kill the strep bacteria.

Natural Candida Treatment Options

Natural Candida Treatment Options
By the How to Cure Candida TEAM
How To Cure Candida
There are many Treatment options out there for Candida, however most if as much as 95% are not treating the root cause that is allowing Candida to thrive in your body.

If you are constantly exhausted, feel sick all the time, get chronic yeast infections or any other of the hundreds of Candida symptoms, then you need to read this.

Traditionally there have been two different options used in the treatment of Candida and Yeast Infections they are:

Conventional Modern Medicine and Natural Treatments

Conventional Modern Medicine has treated Candida using drugs: Of course no permanent cure can be expected from these but once in a while temporarily you can find some relief. Then the yeast returns with a vengeance as the strains are able to mutate and develop into super Candida strains, much in the same way anti-biotic resistant bacteria develops.

Natural Candida treatment Options: These are excellent and highly recommended over drug based approaches. They work with the body to eliminate yeast at a rate the body can handle and also using methods that the body works well with. Traditionally Natural Candida treatment options have included the use of herbal anti-fungals, probiotics which are beneficial bacteria that destroy yeast and a strict diet. All of these are excellent natural Candida treatment options, however they are just that, treatments.

What you may not realize is that all these natural treatments are not in fact targeting the root cause which is actually allowing the Candida to develop, they are fighting an uphill battle. You need to address the deeper root cause in order to expect to permanently eliminate Candida and yeast infections for life.

What are these root causes you may ask?

Well a common one is parasites. Parasites wear down your immune system and allow the overgrowth of Candida to take place in your body. However this is like the story of the Chicken or the Egg. Which came first? Personally as much as I would like to believe that parasites are the main root cause of Candida and it's as simple as just eliminating them too, unfortunately it's not that simple.

The other major causes that must be addressed are amalgams in your mouth that are leeching mercury, if you have these and you have Candida you cannot expect to eliminate your Candida ever until the amalgams are removed. End of story.

Other Causes:

For many people even eliminating parasites and removing heavy metals are not enough, for some it goes deeper still to the extent of genetic predispositions that are prone to environmental toxins that suppress the immune system and allow Candida to develop. You may wonder how anyone can hope to change something on the genetic level.

Well fortunately for you there are ways but it requires a full on approach that systematically improves your health level by level. Some guides explain exactly how to do this step by step, there you'll find your answer.

Find out if you have Candida? I was interested to hear that there was a cause for all of this, and that this was also a well known issue in the natural health industry. The cause it would seem was Candida.

After buying various books on the subject that just seemed to rehash the same information over and over, always focusing on the diet, a few supplements and little else, I found myself growing quite frustrated. The diet was helpful but if I came off of it my symptoms would return almost over night. So this was definitely no help for me.

I read a couple of books online promising to never experience yeast infections again with their “New” approach… another Candida diet again and little else. The closest thing I found to a solution was the yeast infection no more e-book although their dietary restrictions were some of the toughest I’d ever seen, I just couldn’t pull off the amount of raw food required and the diet was again the focal point of the book.

Then I recently attended a meeting at my local ME group and was talking to a group of people who had came across “How to Cure Candida”.
This guide was promising to actually cure my Candida permanently with a 5 step protocol etc, etc. So I figured, what do I have to lose considering it has a 100% money back guarantee if I wasn’t satisfied. So I bought it and was very surprised to find the first Candida cure guide that isn’t all about the diet. They do have a neatly laid out dietary guide, but they don’t waste too much time on it, instead they provide the most extensive list of supplements and therapies I’ve seen anywhere period. Many of the supplements I hadn’t seen mentioned before in other eBooks or in some cases not explained in the way how to cure Candida does. An hour into reading this book and I already knew more about what I could do to eliminate Candida than I ever did.

Their 5 step protocol has a few familiar things in it including the diet, anti-fungals, probiotics etc. It then goes much deeper into why parasites prevent recovery from Candida and how to eliminate them. How to cleanse your kidneys using a method I’d never heard of before. Heavy Metals and why they are of concern and finally their last step which can flush out your liver and provide a powerful detoxification which is supposed to nail the root cause of Candida on the head. On top of all of this they include a alternative therapies section that discusses many therapies I had never heard of including Castor Oil packs, MMS, Hydrogen Peroxide therapy and about 7 or 8 more that detail how to use them and what they can do for you.

The book is very easy to read and nice to look at with pictures throughout, many of healthy people everywhere smiling, (I'm feeling a lot happier ?).

I should make a quick note that the version of How to Cure Candida I read was the full version, the quick start guide I went through as well. The name speaks for itself as this version of the book is a little more focused on treating vaginal and topical yeast infections. Although it still contains the main points from the full guide, I still preferred the full guide much more. Fortunately the quick start guide came free with the full guide so it isn’t a waste at all, and I’m sure some people, women in particular will enjoy this one much more if they’re in the middle of a nasty vaginal yeast infection and want help fast.

In writing this review for How To Cure Candida I’m trying to think of things I didn’t like about the book, in hindsight I suppose they could have added more to the parasite section, although I suppose then they’d have to name it how to cure parasites. Besides this I would have liked if they could tell me what time of the day to take each individual supplement, but they argue it is an open-ended approach, they didn’t want to limit people to a schedule and that seems fair enough. I never liked being told what to do anyway! In order to have permanent elimination of Candida they mention that you need to follow all their steps which will take some time, but if you have suffered with symptoms for years as I have it won’t seem long at all considering.

My conclusion:

In all seriousness How To Cure Candida is at the top of it’s class and will easily provide people with the methods needed to completely eliminate Candida naturally for good. I only wish I’d found this one before spending the couple hundred dollars on all the other Candida guides.

All in all a definite must read for any Candida sufferer. It clearly explains solutions in an easy to follow system that can be read through completely and understood in less than 2 hours. Lots of great information in here that is unique and well explained, I know I’m happy with it. I’ve only been following it for 3 weeks and my energy levels are better and eczema isn’t so obvious. At this rate I won’t be surprised if I really do Cure Candida this time.

Chronic Yeast Infections

Chronic Yeast Infections be a recurring nightmare for some people. Despite the large variety of over the counter and prescription medicines available, they can be tricky conditions to overcome, and often recur without warning.

Home remedies are generally sufficient to deal with infrequent yeast infections, but for chronic yeast infections they're generally best paired with specific medicines.

You should be careful when self-treating, as with some substances - even ones that seem relatively harmless - side-effects can occur when taken in conjunction with other medications. As well, some remedies work perfectly well for some people, but will cause an allergic reaction or otherwise adverse effect in other people.

In these cases where a person might be thinking about mixing remedies to cure cases of normal or chronic yeast infections, a medical practitioner should first be consulted. And a log of the different types of remedies should be kept, as this can help in the event that the person suffers from an adverse reaction to any of the medications.

Chronic yeast infections occur for a number of reasons. One major cause is a weakened immune system, such as with people suffering from HIV or AIDS. If you suffer from recurring yeast infections, it's best that you consult your doctor to rule out the possibility of any contributing factors of a more serious nature.

Having said this, though, of course a weakened immune system is far from the most common cause of chronic yeast infections. Antibiotics are another common cause - a simple, run-of-the-mill course of antibiotics is enough to kill off all the bacteria in your body, which is a prime environment for the rapid growth of yeast-infection bacteria.

If you're going to be taking antibiotics, it's best to take preventative measures to reinforce the 'good' bacteria in your body, such as eating plenty of live yogurt (which contains live acidophilus bacteria cultures) and garlic, which stimulates your immune system and regulates the endocrine system (which is responsible for hormone distribution and regulation).

Another factor for chronic yeast infections lies in stress, and the wrong diet. Stress is a great inhibitor and imbalancer of the normal bodily functionings even though people might not be aware of this. And when this is coupled with a steady diet consisting of all the "wrong" foods, conditions for chronic yeast infections to occur are ripe.

Another common cause of chronic yeast infections in women is the ongoing use of 'feminine products' which include scent, flavorings, or colors. Even using soap to wash yourself is sometimes enough to spark off a yeast infection; ongoing use can cause chronic yeast infections. Steer away from douches, elaborate female washes, genital deodorants, and other chemical-based products. This was the conclusion of a systematic review of clinical studies that is published in the latest update of The Cochrane Library. Authors searched for studies that evaluated the effectiveness of traditional herbs including Chinese, Tibetan and Indian herbal medicines and found 75 different randomized trials. The trials varied in quality, and investigated a wide range of different preparations. Most of the trials had been conducted in China and published in Chinese.

"Many of the trials were small, so it is premature to recommend herbal medicines for routine use in IBS, but there is evidence that some of the medicines did improve the global symptoms of IBS," says lead Review Author Prof Jianping Liu, who works both at the Evidence-based Chinese Medicine Centre for Clinical Research and Evaluation at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and at the National Research Centre in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM), University of Tromso, Norway.

Medicines that showed promise included Chinese herbal formulation and individualised herbal formulation; STW 5; SW 5_ii; as well as Tibetan herbal formula Padma Lax. The Chinese herbal medicine Tongxie Yaofang showed a statistically significant effect on global symptoms, as did the Indian Ayurvedic formula of two herbs.

Six small trials reported that combining conventional and herbal medicines produced greater benefits than using conventional therapies alone, but the Authors believe that larger trials are needed to confirm this finding.

"There is a great need for further rigorously conducted trials that look to see whether it is possible to replicate these positive effects," says Prof Liu.

One of the problems with comparing the results of different trials is the wide range of formulas used, and the imprecision with which different medicines are prepared. "For these trials to be useful they must also improve the description of the herbal medicines being tested," adds Prof Liu.

Chinese, Tibetan and Indian herbal medicines may help people with irritable bowel syndrome (press release)

Ethnobotanical study of Northern Peru reveals abundant system of plant-based medicine spanning 510 plant species

(NaturalNews) A pair of researchers from the University of Hawaii and the San Diego Museum of Man recently examined the traditional plant-based system of medicine -- "ethnobotany" -- in Northern Peru to gather information on ancient herbal remedies and healing rituals, in a study published in the online November edition of Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine. The researchers -- Rainer Bussmann and Douglas Sharon -- traveled to Northern Peru to interview local healers known as curanderos and observe native healing practices. Bussmann and Sharon, who are both fluent in Spanish, also collected ethnobotanical information from plant sellers by purchasing native plants in local markets, and by accompanying curanderos on harvesting trips and to healing ceremonies.

Bussmann and Sharon collected Northern Peruvian plants from the wild and also purchased them from the markets, then took the specimens to curanderos to discuss medicinal properties and the plants' role in healing rituals.

The researchers were able to determine many of the plants' properties, including the season in which they are best grown, the region in which they are harvested and various ailments the plants have proven effective at treating.

Bussmann and Sharon were able to collect 510 plant species used by Northern Peruvian healers, as well as identify their traditional uses, vernacular names and various applications. The researchers found that the majority of treatments -- 207 -- were used for ritual or "magical" ailments, such as susto and espanto, a condition caused by fright brought on by a life event or the patient's environment.

Most of the researchers' plant discoveries were used to treat ritual or magical ailments, or were parts of hallucinogenic healing ceremonies. Common illnesses in Northern Peruvian regions include mal aire (bad air), mal viento (bad wind), mal ojo (evil eye) and envidia (envy). Such conditions are characterized by shock, poisoned food and changes in body temperature. Bussmann and Sharon characterized such illnesses in Western medical terms as "psychosomatic disorders," which are physical symptoms brought about from mental or emotional factors.

Ninety-five plants were used to treat respiratory disorders, which included common ailments such as cold, flu, bronchitis and asthma. According to Bussmann and Sharon, many such conditions could be brought on by damp living conditions that foster mold and insufficient air circulation.

The researchers found that 85 medicinal plants treated urinary tract problems, such as kidney stones and infections of the bladder or kidneys. For example, the plant Chanca Piedra, which translates to "Stonebreaker," is used to treat kidney stones, and has gained popularity in the international market.

Sixty-six of the plants battled infections of female organs, the researchers found. Uteran, ovarian, vaginal and post-partum infections were treated with 100 different applications of the plant species, while 39 additional uses helped women with childbirth, menstrual cramps and cycle regulation. A select few plants were involved in medicinal procedures for abortion, birth control and female fertility.

On the flip side, 52 plant species were used to treat "male" problems, including prostate inflammation, impotence, urination problems, fertility and hair loss. Twelve species served the dual purposes of impotence remedy and aphrodisiac.

Bussmann and Sharon said they believed that because only 61 plants were used to aid liver disorders, the curanderos were mainly employed to treat magical and ritualistic problems, such as mal aire.

"Disorders of internal organs fall far behind the most commonly treated medical conditions," they wrote. "This is another indication that curanderos in Northern Peru are to a large extent specializing in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders, and that 'bodily' illness are treated more as a sideline."

However, the researchers turned up 59 plant treatments for inflammation, such as that caused by tonsil and throat and infections. An additional 51 were used to treat stomach problems, while 45 aided in rheumatism treatment.

But perhaps the most interesting plant species utilized by the curanderos were those employed in cancer treatment. "The use of plant species in this field could provide particularly interesting leads in medicinal development," Bussmann and Sharon wrote.

Eighty-three percent of the plants the researchers collected were native Peruvian plants, and two-thirds were harvested and utilized fresh. Many of the plants were collected wild, and the most common applications included ingesting the herb or decoction, or applying the plants as poultices.

The Northern Peruvian curanderos typically used the leaves or the whole plant to create treatments. Medicinal flowers from the plants were used in roughly 10 percent of treatments, while seeds were used in 7 percent of remedies. The fruit, bark, peel or wood of healing plants were used in only a fraction of medicines.

According to Bussmann and Sharon's study conclusions, traditional Northern Peruvian curanderos have helped the region's centuries-old system of plant-based medicine survive, in spite of hundreds of years of suppression by Western medicine.

"Current research indicates that the composition of the local pharmacopoeia has changed since colonial times," the researchers wrote. "However, the overall number of medicinal plants employed seems to have increased. This indicates that the Northern Peruvian health tradition is still going strong, and that the healers and public are constantly experimenting with new remedies."

Though the ethnobotanical medical system of Northern Peru has survived thus far, Bussmann and Sharon warn that urban growth, climatic change, global interest in harvesting medicinal plants, and large-scale mining are serious threats to its future survival.

Ethnobotanical study of Northern Peru reveals abundant system of plant-based medicine spanning 510 plant species

Marigold flowers, a cure for skin disease

Marigold (Calendula Officinalis) is one of the best herbs for treating localized skin ailments. it can be used wherever there is an inflammation on the skin. While some natural methods of health care can be as expensive as conventional ones, many of the options do promote a better way of healing the body.

There are many people who swear by herbal remedies, and there are even some doctors who incorporate herbs with modern medicine. If you go into any health food store, no doubt you will find at least one aisle stocked with all kinds of herbs in boxes, bottles and loose in bins or bags. Your first encounter is most likely because you have a cold or flu. Maybe someone in the office suggested you take some Echinacea. On the other hand, maybe you have been having difficulty sleeping, and you remember reading somewhere that chamomile tea was good for getting rid of insomnia? The very first thing you need to do before taking any herbal remedy is to do your homework. By themselves and in certain doses, some herbs are beneficial. There are, however, herbs that should not be mixed together and herbs that should not be taken in more than the recommended amounts.

One such herb is Ephedra, or Ma Huang. While this herb can be useful, far too many people abused it. More is not always better, especially with an herb like this. A few years ago, Ephedra was touted as the miracle herb, and quickly gained popularity in the gyms and with athletes. Ephedra boasted quick weight loss by increasing the metabolism and could help with respiratory problems. What people did not know was that Ephedra increases the body's core temperature and is a very powerful stimulant, and in some cases, people have died from taking too much of this potent herb.

Herbs do not offer an overnight cure. Where taking an aspirin or allergy pill will take merely hours to start to work, herbs often take up to three weeks to start working. Unlike conventional means, the substances in the herbs have to build up in the body before they can start to take effect. There are some herbs, like Seneca (a laxative), or ginger (a digestive aide) that will work within a few hours.

There are some herbs that work more quickly than others. Chamomile, Kava-Kava and Valerian, which are all good for sleeplessness, will begin to work in a few hours. If you have an upset stomach or a case of car sickness, ginger will take care of that immediately. If Valerian sounds familiar, it should, this herb's derivative is Valium. Although Valerian is not addictive it is still best to use it with care. As with all herbs, do your research first and remember it is best to err on the side of caution and treat all herbs with the respect and care they deserve.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Jeff Clare has worked in healthcare and now writes regularly on health related topics including homeopathy and lung conditions and much more

Valerian as a sedative

A sedative is an action that calms the nervous system and reduces stress and nervousness throughout the body. It's unbelievable to think that such a small berry could have the potential to prolong life for an extended period of time. What's more it's hard to believe that people have known this secret for many centuries and have managed to keep it a secret.

Goji berries are a red colored berry and originate from deep within the mountains of the Himalayas, in the regions of Tibet, China and Mongolia. Goji berries are said to have been first discovered by Buddhist monks in Tibet and later became a part of every Buddhists diet throughout the centuries to follow. It was these people that first discovered the true potential of Goji berries when they began to notice that their average lifespan began to increase.

Goji berries contain strong antioxidants that help to remove the build up of harmful free radicals inside the body. Free radicals have the potential to create cancer cells later in life. More so today with the increase of free radicals in many of our foods, we are becoming more at risk of cancer than ever before. This is one of the reasons why goji berries have become so popular in recent times as people are becoming more aware of the risk of cancer and are choosing to do something about it by minimising the risk of contracting it.

Goji berries are said to stimulates the release by the pituitary gland of human growth hormone (HGH), the youth hormone. The benefits of HGH are extensive and include reduction of body fat, better sleep, improved memory, accelerated healing, restored libido and a more youthful appearance. Among Goji berry’s beneficial compounds is a category called phytochemicals. Flavonoids belong to this category of nutrients that are extremely high in antioxidants including quercetin, anthocyanadins and antocyanins. Bioflavonoids are essential to the absorption and utilization of other nutrients, especially vitamin C.

Also Goji has been historically used in Asia for the natural treatment of insomnia. In several medical study groups with elderly people, nearly all patients taking goji reported better quality of sleep.

As they are still a little known fruit in the Western world, it may be hard to find goji related products down at the local supermarket. One of the best places to buy goji berries and other goji products is online. The following sites are two such places where you can find Goji products.

A variety of sources are available here

<a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=7fGW8FI79Vo&offerid=131232.689127198&type=10&subid="onMouseOver="window.status='http://www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk'; return true;" onMouseOut="window.status=''; return true;" rel="nofollow">Goji Juice in the USA

<a href="http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=25240&merchantID=500&programmeID=1723&mediaID=0&tracking=Goji&url=" target="_top" onmouseover=”window.status=’http://www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=’ ‘;return true;” rel="nofollow">A variety of sources are available here

Goji berries - Superfood

Originating from the Himalayan mountains, Goji berries are regarded in Orient as an anti-aging, strength-building superfood.
The Chinese Wonder Fruit. Also known as Wolfberries, Lycium berries and Gou Ji Zi berries, they have been used in Traditional Mongolian, Tibetan and Chinese medicine for centuries to nourish yin and improve the functioning of the 'water element'. A handful a day is said to provide the energy to overcome difficult obstacles in healing, promote cheerfulness and brighten the spirit.

Goji berries have strong antioxidant, anti-ageing properties and may help to boost the immune system, improve hearing, eye-sight and liver function, maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, strengthen bones and tendons, burn fat, build muscle, increase libido, enhance fertility and reduce morning sickness.

The Goji berry is a nutritious powerhouse and is so very tasty. Eat them just the way they are as the perfect snack or add to cereal, yogurt, muesli and smoothies. Gojis make a sweet tea or use as a delicious garnish in exciting dishes.

Goji berries contain up to 21 trace minerals (the main ones being zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus) and are the richest source of carotenoids, including beta-carotene (more beta carotene than carrots), of all known foods or plants on earth!
Goji berries also contain vitamins B1, B2, B6, and vitamin E.
Mature fruits contain about 11 mg or iron per 100 grams, beta-sisterol (an anti-inflammatory agent), linoleic acid (a fatty acid), sesquiterpenoids (cyperone, solavetivone), tetraterpenoids (zeaxanthin, physalin),and betaine (0.1%).
Goji berries contain polysaccharides which fortify the immune system. A polysaccharide found in this fruit has been found to be a powerful secretagogue (a substance that stimulates the secretion of human growth hormone by the pituitary gland).

A variety of sources are available here

Goji juice available in USA

Brief introduction to Echinacea

Echinacea is the collective term for a group of plants known as the purple cone flower. The plant is native to the USA. The name Echinacea is derived from the Greek word echinos meaning hedgehog – this relates to the spiky centre of each flower.

The Echinacea plant.
There are 9 different species of the plant, the two most popular species used in herbal medicine are Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia are the easiest to grow and therefore the most common varieties.

Echinacea was used by the native Americans for many years. One of the key uses they had was for treating snake bites, so Echinacea is also known as snake root. They also used it for treating insect bites, smallpox, sore throats, measles and toothache.

During the 1800s, European settlers also began to use Echinacea medicinally. This continued until the use of antibiotics became widespread as the ‘cure anything’ drug. Echinacea has become popular again as a herbal treatment in the last 20 or so years.

As with many herbal or alternative health treatments, there are differing views as to the benefits of Echinacea. Many studies have been carried out but have shown different results; comparisons of these studies is complicated, however, by the use of different species and different forms of the medicine on the same medical issue.

On the whole, medical practitioners don’t recommend or prescribe Echinacea due to a lack of clear evidence, or an understanding of herbal medicine, but they also don’t object to its use.

Echinacea has been used to:

* Treat upper respiratory infections, including colds and flu
* Relieve hayfever
* Treat urinary tract infections (only anecdotal evidence to support this use)
* Activate or boost the immune system (most current research is focussing on this potential)
* Act as an antibiotic
* Purify blood
* Act as an antiviral agent against flu and herpes
* Stimulate wound healing
* Benefits skin conditions such as eczema, burns, insect bites, ulcers and acne
* Reduce inflammation associated with arthritis and lymphatic swellings
* Treat CFS, indigestion, gastro and weight loss as a homeopathic remedy

The European Medicines Agency(EMEA) assessed the body of evidence and approved the use of expressed juice and dried expressed juice from fresh flowering aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea for the short-term prevention and treatment of the common cold. According to their recommendations,

It should not be used for more than 10 days. The use in children below 1 year of age is contraindicated, because of theoretically possible undesirable effect on immature immune system. The use in children between 1 and 12 years of age is not recommended, because efficacy has not been sufficiently documented although specific risks are not documented. In the absence of sufficient data, the use in pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.

At the moment, no one knows exactly what is in Echinacea that makes it useful medicinally. This means that there are no standards for commercial Echinacea products, so each brand you try could have different results for the same illness.

Anyone allergic to daisies and those taking itraconazole, fexafenacline and lovastatin may experience reactions so probably should avoid taking Echinacea.

If you wish to have more information or to purchase Echinacea try the links below:

UK / International supplier of Echinacea

Echinacea from Vitamin World

Herbal and Natural Medicines – Research Is On The Increase

As you are no doubt aware medicines derived from herbal and natural products are becoming increasingly popular in many cultures around the globe. Many of these herbal and natural remedies were developed centuries ago in eastern culture and they have been used much longer than any other variety of health care products.

As well as the Eastern culture other societies have, throughout history, known about and have successfully used herbs as well as natural substances to cure all kinds of different ailments. The pharmacopoeia, as we know it today, was initially developed in the early nineteen hundreds and is primarily based on long established natural and herbal remedies.

Plant substances, or synthetically produced plant compounds, are in-fact used in the manufacture of nearly twenty-five percent of all prescription drugs that are used in the United States. Medical researchers have recently estimated that approximately eighty percent of the people in the world have used, or currently use, some form of herbal and natural medicine on a regular basis. The multinational pharmaceutical companies are constantly researching and looking for new plant species that can be successfully harvested to create new and better medicines for the public.

Research on Herbal and Natural Medicines

Up until now the pharmaceutical companies and independent medical research organizations have not devoted a great deal of time researching the origins and medical properties of ancient herbal and natural remedies. This situation has begun to change and now an increasing number of research studies are being conducted with many more expected to be undertaken in the near future. This is primarily as a result of the increased popularity of herbal and natural remedies in the western style markets of the United States, Europe and many other major countries throughout the world.

There are many popular herbal and natural medicines which are inexpensive and readily available. The natural remedy known as St Johns Wort is currently used to help people who suffer minor to moderate depression problems. Other herbal medicines have been used to combat diabetes as well as deal with the treatment of high cholesterol levels. For instance Garlic and artichokes are both believed to assist with the reduction of cholesterol levels.

Some herbalists believe that Echinacea can reduce the time frame of the common cold and can also reduce the severity of the symptoms. As a word of warning some research does suggest that the quantity required to fight a cold virus is higher than the dosage that most manufacturers of the product recommend. Also it is important to note that there has not been sufficient research undertaken to find out the possible side affects of these higher than generally recommended dosages.

People have been using Nigella Sativa (also known as black cumin) for all types of health related issues including pulmonary infections, influenza, some allergies, coughs and the treatment of stomach aches. Some herbalists believe that oregano might be useful in battling multi-drug resistant bacteria. Green tea is thought to have the ability to inhibit growth of breast cancer cells.

There are many other herbal and natural medicines that are being used throughout the world, however, if you do decide to try some of these products you should discuss the usage with your Doctor or seek the advice of a Doctor who specializes in traditional Chinese Medicine. Please be aware that some herbal and natural medicines are known to have unpleasant and harmful side affects so if you do intend to use them please follow the directions regarding dosage that come with the products.

Article written by Madsie
Article Source: http://www.ArticleStreet.com

Green Tea

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years as a medicinal remedy to treat such ailments as migraine headaches, body ache, poor digestion, and to improve general well-being and life expectancy.
Green tea is rich in bioflavonoids, and one of its main uses is fighting free radicals in your body. Green tea also contains high level of polyphenols (a bioflavonoid), and it's also a rich source of EGCG (an antioxidant), which is over 200 times more potent than vitamin E in fighting free radicals and pro-oxidants.
Green tea is now found to be useful in the fight against cancer, see this BBC article entitled Green tea extract 'is cancer aid'

The EGCG in green tea is said to protect against digestive and respiratory act infections. Green tea may also prevent and help reduce the severity of osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that if you consume approximately four cups of green tea a day you may be able to protect yourself from developing arthritis, and if you already have arthritis, consuming green tea can help to diminish the inflammation it causes.

Green Tea can ease mental fatigue and has been used in treating digestive tract infections. It is also said to treat migraine headaches, and since the leaves contain a natural source of fluorine, it may be helpful in preventing tooth decay. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves that have been left to ferment. Which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

To sum up, some of the medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful are: cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cariovascular disease, infection, impaired immune function.

Properties:
analgesic, anti-viral, antioxidant, astringent, cardiotonic, carminative, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, nervine, stimulant, stomachic.

A source in the UK is available here

Chinese Green Tea in USA

Another great source is here

Goldenseal

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is a small perennial plant with a single hairy stem producing two five-lobed serrated leaves and a small single apetalous flower with greenish sepals, giving way to a raspberry-like fruit. It grows in rich shady woodlands through north and north-eastern North America, but is rare in the wild and is usually cultivated for commerce.

Constituents: 5% of the root consists of isoquinoline alkaloids (hydrastine, berberine and canadine) chlorogenic acid, traces of essential oil, resin, fatty oil, starch, sugar

Hydrastis has a powerful tonic action on the mucous membranes of the body and is useful in many digestive problems, such as gastritis, ulceration and colitis. It may be used to treat depressed digestion associated with liver disorder or sensitivity (e.g. to fatty foods and alcohol). It is also a valuable remedy for the treatment of upper respiratory catarrh. As a bitter stimulant it is useful in anorexia. Its tonic and astringent actions contribute to its use in uterine conditions such as menorrhagia and hemorrhage. It helps reduce menopausal symptoms and can ease pre-menstrual syndromes linked with stagnation.

Externally, Hydrastis used in the treatment of eczema, ringworm, pruritis, earache and conjunctivitis. It may be used as a mouthwash for gum disease and mouth ulcers, as a douche for vaginal problems, as eardrops for middle-ear inflammation and congestion, and as a snuff for nasal inflammation.

Berberine is a bitter alkaloid with antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects: it is also sedative to the central nervous system. Hydrastine is a stimulant to the autonomic nervous system and appears to exert astringent effects on mucosal surfaces throughout the body. Canadine is bitter and sedative.

Actions: Tonic, astringent, antihaemorrhagic, choleretic, antimicrobial, anticatarrhal, mild laxative, cholagogue, alterative, stimulant to autonomic nervous system and involuntary muscle, stomatic, oxytocic, bitter digestive stimulant, haemostatic, anti-inflammatory, healing to the gut wall and other mucous membranes, hypertensive, sedative to central nervous system.

As Hydrastis stimulates the involuntary muscles of the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy. Some fungi have beneficial uses such as in baking and brewing, while others cause illness and infections. Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds also can be responsible for nail fungal infections. All of these microscopic organisms live in warm, moist environments, including swimming pools and showers. They can invade your skin through tiny invisible cuts or through a small separation between your nail and nail bed. They cause problems only if your nails are continually exposed to warmth and moisture — conditions perfect for the growth and spread of fungi. Infection with nail fungus occurs more in toenails than in fingernails because toenails are often confined in a dark, warm, moist environment inside your shoes — where fungi can thrive. Another reason may be the diminished blood circulation to the toes as compared with the fingers, which makes it harder for your body's immune system to detect and eliminate the infection.

For more information visit: Zetaclear

Fungus Nail Natural Treatment

Fungus Nail Fingernails and toenails are the common breed of fungal infections. Though it is common, it is not easy to get rid of. Everywhere we go, fungi are present, and they can give different effects on our body. Like a nail, for example. When infected, the nails will look thick and dull. Eventually, it will become crumbly and will result to the loss of your nails. Not only does it look very pleasing. It has a bad odor due to the fungus or death of the nail. Plus, it is very unhealthy and unhygienic.
Because of the strong resistance of our body's barriers against fungus entering the nails, once they get inside, they are as difficult to eliminate. There are treatments which can be either Topical, surgical, or by medications, to fight the fungal infection. However, they may be too costly –except Zetaclear found at Zetaclear, which is easily affordable and is very effective in eliminating nail fungus infections- and they have to be continuous for a long time, or else nothing will happen even with the efforts. Even if it may seem to clear up from time to time, they may return when the medication is not progressed. If you are unsure of the signs of having a nail fungus, you may want to see if the nails are becoming yellowish, and sometimes brownish. They also become thick and brittle which results to an easy breakage of the nails. Also check if the tips of the nails seem to be crumbling. To prevent nail fungus, you may want to avoid wearing nylons when possible and switch to cotton or natural wool instead. Do use breathable shoes when going out and always wash your feet and dry it thoroughly. Sharing of wash cloths and towels are not advisable, as wet surfaces easily transmit bacteria.
If you do not really need to use Nail polish, avoid them because they are one of the main causes of the infection. The same goes when already infected. Although you have these options (topical, surgical and oral) to remove the fungal infections, there are still some things in your house that you may temporarily use to treat it. If you are already prone to the infection, it is advisable to use a powder to help eliminate athlete’s foot.

For more information visit: Zetaclear

Caralluma Fimbriata - natural appetite suppressant

What You Need to Know About Caralluma Fimbriata

Caralluma fimbriata is a succulent plant, in the cactus family, that has been used as a natural appetite suppressant in India for centuries. It's a new arrival in the family of cacti and succulent plants that are becoming increasingly popular for their appetite suppressant, and weight loss properties, as well as their ability to lower blood sugar. Supplements made from the popular hoodia gordonii cactus from the Kalahari Desert in Africa, are for example, growing in popularity and usage in the U.S. and Europe.

Like Hoodia, caralluma fimbriata has been used to suppress appetite, and as a portable food for hunting. It is used to suppress hunger and appetite, and enhance endurance throughout India. It is also sometimes considered a "famine food," used during periods of famine to suppress appetite. For centuries, people in rural areas of India have eaten Caralluma fimbriata, which grows wild over various parts of the country. Caralluma fimbriata is cooked as a vegetable, used in preserves like chutneys and pickles, or eaten raw. Caralluma fimbriata is believed to block the activity of several enzymes, which then blocks the formation of fat, forcing fat reserves to be burned.

Caralluma fimbriata is also believed to have an effect on the appetite control mechanism of the brain. Ayurvedic (traditional Indian medicine) experts have noted that there are no adverse effects when using Caralluma fimbriata, and the plant has no known toxicity. A patented, tested extract of Caralluma fimbriata has been developed and standardized by a company called Gencor. Known as "Slimaluma," the extract delivers the plant in a concentrated form. One of the only products available in the U.S. that uses the Slimaluma formula is Country Life's GenaSlim supplement, which combines the patented Slimaluma extract of Caralluma fimbriata with EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) from green tea. Together they reportedly have a synergistic effect on appetite control and weight loss.

In several clinical trials Slimaluma was shown to be effective in reducing body fat through appetite control. If you're interested in trying this product for weight control, you can compare prices now from various online vendors.
SourcesKhan B, et. al. In India, it has been used by herbalists to treat intestinal infections, suppressed menses, and colic.

The constituents of aloe latex responsible for its laxative effects are known as anthraquinone glycosides. These molecules are split by the normal bacteria in the large intestines to form other molecules (aglycones), which exert the laxative action. Since aloe is such a powerful laxative, other plant laxatives such as senna or cascara are often recommended first.

It is not yet clear which constituents are responsible for the wound healing properties of aloe. Studies suggest polysaccharides help promote skin healing by anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-stimulating actions. Aloe’s effects on the skin may also be enhanced by its high concentration of amino acids, protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A, B12 and E, essential fatty acids and is naturally rich in:

Vitamin C which helps maintain tone of blood vessels and promotes good circulation and is essential to the health of the adrenal gland which supports our body in times of stress.

Amino acids which are chains of molecules which construct protein in our body.

Enzymes, which are the life-principle in every live, organic atom and molecule of natural raw food, rejuvenate aged tissues and promote healthy skin.

Germanium which is a mineral that some health authorities claim therapeutic benefits for: immunodeficiency, pain, cardiac disorders, circulatory disturbances and eye problems.

Aloe has been used to treat minor burns. Treatment of more serious burns should only be done under the supervision of a healthcare professional. For internal use of aloe gel, two tablespoons (30 ml) three times per day is used by some people for inflammatory bowel conditions, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. For type 2 diabetes, clinical trials have used one tablespoon (15 ml) of aloe juice, twice daily. Note the treatment of diabetes with aloe should only be done under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

Suggested Properties:
Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and energy tonic

A good UK source of Aloe Vera is available here

An American supplier of Aloe Vera

Another source here

Licorice as a herbal remedy

As a herbal remedy Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a wide range of uses and is probably one of the most over-looked of all herbal remedies. It is often used for many ailments including asthma, athlete's foot, baldness, body odour, bursitis, canker sores, chronic fatigue, immune deficiency syndrome, depression, colds and flu, coughs, dandruff, emphysema, gingivitis and tooth decay, gout, heartburn, viral infections, fungal infections, ulcers, liver problems, menopause, sore throat, tendinitis, tuberculosis, ulcers, yeast infections, prostate enlargement and arthritis.
Hundreds of substances have been identified in licorice, including compounds called flavonoids and various plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). The herb's key therapeutic compound, glycyrrhizin (which is 50 times sweeter than sugar) exerts numerous beneficial effects on the body, making licorice a valuable herb for treating a host of ailments. It also seems to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones such as cortisol (the body's primary stress-fighting adrenal hormone), making these hormones more available to the body.
Licorice also appears to enhance immunity by boosting levels of interferon, a key immune system chemical that fights off attacking viruses. It also contains powerful antioxidants as well as certain phytoestrogens that can perform some of the functions of the body's natural estrogens; very helpful during the menopause. Glycyrrhizinic acid also seems to stop the growth of many bacteria and of viruses such as influenza A.
Licorice can reduce the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia. By enhancing cortisol activity, glycyrrhizin helps to increase energy, ease stress and reduce the symptoms of ailments sensitive to cortisol levels.

Properties:
Anti-allergic, anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, demulcent, emollient, estrogenic (mild), expectorant, laxative, pectoral (moderate), soothing.

An American supplier of Licorice Root

A UK based source of Licorice is available here

Another source here

Boost your immune system

Do you ever wonder why some people get sick and others don't although they're exposed to the same germs? It has to do with the immune system which is a balanced network of cells and organs that work together to protect against disease. It also blocks foreign proteins from getting into your body. Read on to learn more about some natural ways to keep from getting sick this season.

A diet low in red meat and high in fish and fruits and vegetables (especially blueberries and broccoli) boosts the immune system. By incorporating lemons into your drinks and meals it will help to maintain your body's internal climate at a ph that supports healthy bacteria. Try squeezing fresh lemon juice into a glass of water or add it to green tea and your favorite meal for a natural flavoring. Make sure you don't drop the whole lemon into your water because there might be bacteria on the surface. Chicken soup is not only good for the soul but it has also been proven to pump up the immune system and make you feel better faster.

Start by keeping your stress levels down by listening to your favorite music, meditating or laughing. In addition, sex has been shown to give a boost of IGA which is a protein from the immune system that helps fight infections. It plays a critical role in keeping pathogens from entering the body and capturing those that do sneak in. It produces natural opioid peptide happy little brain chemicals that are releases during sex. Also, a social support system, with lots of hugging and hard strokes is more foretelling of a long life than age, medical condition and smoking.

Alcohol in moderation also releases opioids and raises IGA levels. However, too much alcohol actually brings your immune system down. Moderate exercise is also a good thing but again, too much training and working out runs makes you more susceptible to illnesses. Get enough sleep to balance out hormone levels, wipe down your desk area at work with antibacterial wipes to avoid germs. Also, by spending time in cold weather it stimulates the thyroid glands and allows the body to produce the right amount of energy when needed. Why not incorporate some of these tips into your life today?

Article by: Lyla Feldman writes about health and fitness. In China, for example, ginger has been used to aid digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea for more than 2,000 years. Since ancient times, ginger has also been used to help treat arthritis, colic, diarrhea, and heart conditions. Also Ginger continues to be valued around the world as an important cooking spice and is believed to help the common cold, flu-like symptoms, headaches, and even painful menstrual periods. Native to Asia where its use as a culinary spice spans at least 4,000 years.

Today, ginger root is widely used as a digestive aid for mild stomach upset and is commonly recommended by health care professionals to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy.Ginger is used as support in inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, and may even be used in heart disease or cancer.

Motion Sickness

Several studies suggest that ginger may be more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms associated with motion sickness. In one trial of 80 novice sailors (prone to motion sickness), those who took powdered ginger experienced a significant reduction in vomiting and cold sweating compared to those who took placebo. Similar results were found in a study with healthy volunteers.

Conventional prescription and non-prescription medicines that decrease nausea may also cause unwanted side effects, such as dry mouth and drowsiness. Given the safety of ginger, many people find it a welcome alternative to these medications to relieve their motion sickness.

Pregnancy Related Nausea and Vomiting

A limited number of human studies suggests that 1 gram daily of ginger may be safe and effective for pregnancy-associated nausea and vomiting when used for short periods (no longer than 4 days). Several studies have found that ginger is more effective than placebo in relieving nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. In a small study including 30 pregnant women with severe vomiting, those who ingested 1 gram of ginger every day for four days reported more relief from vomiting than those who received placebo. In a larger study including 70 pregnant women with nausea and vomiting, those who received a similar dosage of ginger felt less nauseous and experienced fewer vomiting episodes than those who received placebo.

Chemotherapy nausea

There is evidence from a few studies that suggests ginger reduces the severity and duration of nausea (but not vomiting) during chemotherapy. Long-term studies should be performed to confirm these results and to establish safety.

Inflammation

In addition to providing relief from nausea and vomiting, ginger extract has long been used in traditional medical practices to decrease inflammation. In fact, many health care professionals today use ginger to help treat health problems associated with inflammation, such as arthritis and ulcerative colitis. In a study of people with osteoarthritis of the knee, those who received a ginger extract twice daily experienced less pain and required fewer pain-killing medications compared to those who received placebo.

Other possible uses.

Although it is much too early to tell if this will benefit those with heart disease, a few preliminary studies suggest that ginger may lower cholesterol and prevent the blood from clotting. Each of these effects may protect the blood vessels from blockage and the damaging effects of blockage such as atherosclerosis, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Laboratory studies have also found that components in ginger may have anticancer activity. However more research needs to be performed to determine the effects of ginger on various cancers in humans.

American supplier of Ginger Root

Also here

A good source in the UK of Ginger is available here

Another source here

Korean Ginseng

Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng) has a history of herbal use going back over 5,000 years. It is one of the most highly regarded of herbal medicines in Asia, where it has gained an almost magical reputation for being able to promote health, general body vigour and also to prolong life. The genus name Panax is derived from the Greek word meaning "panacea" or "all-healing"; the species ginseng is said to mean "wonder of the world". Both terms refer to the medicinal virtues of the plant. In the last decade it has gained hrepopularity in the West and there is extensive literature on the beneficial effects of ginseng and its constituents.

Ginseng has been listed by some as useful in the treatment of anemia, cancer, depression, diabetes, fatigue, hypertension, insomnia, shock, effects of radiation, effects of morphine and cocaine use, environmental, physical and mental stress, and chronic illness. It has been said to act as a stimulant, promote endurance, increase life expectancy, relax the nervous system, improve mental awareness, encourage proper hormonal functions, improve lipid levels, lower cholesterol, improve nerve growth, and increase resistance to disease. It has been used to increase the appetite and bodily energy, regulate menses, ease childbirth, increase fertility of women, and treat periodontal disease

Research has shown that Ginseng may have the ability to act as an "adaptogen", prolonging life by combating viral infections and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Research continues to support ginseng protective role against anti-cancer treatments and drugs, perhaps even countering the side effects of chemotherapy. There is some thought that Ginseng may be useful for the prevention of abuse and dependence of opioids and psychostimulants.

Ginseng has been used to both stimulate and relax the nervous system. It increases capillary circulation in the brain and decreases the effects of stress. Though there are many kinds of ginsengs in the world but they cannot rival Asian Ginseng in ingredients and medicinal effects. It contains as many as 29 different ginsenosides while the others contains 8-9.

Asian Ginseng contains anti-aging substances such as anti-oxidants and insulin-like substances which are not found in any other type of ginseng.

Ginsenosides are a diverse group of steroidal saponins, which demonstrate the ability to target a myriad of tissues, producing an array of pharmacological responses. However, many mechanisms of ginsenoside activity still remain unknown. Since ginsenosides and other constituents of ginseng produce effects that are different from one another, and a single ginsenoside initiates multiple actions in the same tissue, the overall pharmacology of ginseng is remains remarkably complex and esoteric.

In western herbal medicine, Panax ginseng regulating effects on the immune system have been studied for potential effectiveness in preventing colds, flu, and some forms of cancer. In clinical studies, Panax ginseng has been shown to lower blood levels of both sugar and cholesterol, therefore it may help treat type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. Its other potential uses are not as well defined, however. In separate studies of laboratory animals and humans, Panax ginseng had a relaxing effect on muscles in the lungs. The resulting airway expansion may help relieve asthma symptoms and other lung conditions that result from constricted airways.

Recent reports on the pharmacology of ginseng indicate a wide range of effects, including influence on the central nervous system, endocrine and adrenocortical systems, internal, organs, metabolism, blood pressure and sugar, gonadotropic activity, cellular ageing, tumours, and stress. Ginseng appears to relieve stress, increase sexual activity, and facilitate mating in laboratory animals. The herb has been reported to be effective in prolonging survival time during cardiac arrest. It is reported to show hypoglycemic activity.
Other data shows it works not only in preventing adult diseases including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and impotence but can also aid in treatment.

A good UK source of Ginseng is available here.

Another selection of Ginseng products is here

Korean Ginseng - USA supply

Garlic As a Natural Herbal Remedy

Garlic (Allium Sativum) is one of the great health tonics and does have scientifically-proven medicinal properties. It contains a substance called Allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties that are equivalent to a weak form of penicillin. It is a natural antibiotic and is useful in treating everything from allergies to tonsillitis. Garlic contains many sulfur compounds which help to detoxify the body, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Garlic has also demonstrated anti-cancer, antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant effects.

Today people use garlic to help prevent atherosclerosis (plaque that build up on the lining of the arteries causing blockage and possibly leading to heart attack or stroke), reduce colds, coughs and bronchitis.

Garlic also has some antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help scavenge free radicals; particles that can damage cell membranes, interact with genetic material and possibly contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of conditions including heart disease and cancer.

Common Cold: A well-designed study of nearly 150 people supports the value of garlic for preventing and treating the common cold. In this study, people received either garlic supplements or a placebo for 12 weeks during winter cold season. Those who received the garlic had significantly fewer colds than those who received placebo. Also when suffering with a cold, the symptoms lasted for a shorter time in those receiving garlic compared to those receiving a placebo.

Atherosclerosis: Studies suggest that fresh garlic and garlic supplements may prevent blood clots and destroy plaque. Blood clots and plaque block blood flow and contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Blockage of blood flow to the heart, brain and legs, can lead to heart attack, strokes. If garlic does reduce the build up of plaque then strokes, heart attacks may be less likely to occur in people who eat garlic or take garlic supplements.

High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure: A number of studies have found that garlic reduces elevated total cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure more effectively than placebo. However, the extent to which garlic is effective is small.

Tuberculosis: Numerous in-vitro studies have demonstrated that garlic extract inhibits the growth of different species of bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the organism responsible for tuberculosis. Very high concentrations of garlic extract were needed to slow down the growth of M. tuberculosis in these studies, so some experts are concerned that these levels may be toxic to people. While further research in people is needed, one animal study found that garlic oil also inhibited M. tuberculosis and reduced lesions in the lungs of these animals.

Cancer: In-Vitro and animal studies suggest that garlic may have some anti-cancer activity. Observational, population-based studies (which follow groups of people over time) suggest that people who have more raw or cooked garlic in their diet are less likely to have certain types of cancer, particularly colon and stomach cancers. Dietary garlic may also offer some protection against the development of breast, prostate and throat cancers. However, these types of cancer have not been as extensively studied as colon and stomach cancer.
